Get Sports Vision Testing from Your Optometrists in Longmont

For both amateur and professional athletes, vision is one of the most important factors contributing to performing to the best of their ability. In addition to incorporating standard vision tests, a sports vision eye exam includes assessment of depth perception, eye tracking, peripheral vision and eye coordination. Other tests may be given by your eye doctors in Longmont depending on the type of sports you engage in regularly.

What are the Benefits of Sports Vision Testing?

Optometrists recommend athletes receive regular eye care and sport vision exams so their eye doctor can detect any vision or eye health issues in their earliest stages. Other benefits of sports vision testing include:

  • Detecting and correcting visual deficits that interfere with an athlete's ability to concentrate on the game ball (eye tracking) optimize their hand-eye coordination and anticipate actions of team players
  • Measuring and improving reactions to specific situations involving movement of a football, baseball, soccer ball, etc
  • Determining what kind of sports eyewear is best suited for an athlete's particular activity
  • Making small but vital changes to existing lens prescriptions according to the results of a sports vision test

Your eye doctors in Longmont will also perform tests involving an in-depth examination of the fundus (macula, retina, fovea and optic disc) to detect signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration or other vision and eye health disorders.

Types of Sports Vision Tests

In addition to reading the Snellen Eye Chart printed with big and small letters of the alphabet, athletes are given the following specialized tests:

  • Contrast sensitivity - evaluates your ability to identify positions of parallel gray stripes against different colored backgrounds. As the test progresses, the shades of the gray stripes and backgrounds begin matching closely, making it more difficult for you to detect contrasts. If your eye doctor discovers you have low contrast sensitivity, tinted lenses can help you better track and focus on objects.
  • Hirschberg test - an ocular alignment test designed to evaluate eye coordination; the Hirschberg test examines certain points on your cornea where light reflects to evaluate eye alignment.
  • Eye dominance - during this sports vision test, optometrist has patients focus on an object moving closer to their eyes. If one eye loses focus or diverges prematurely, this may indicate the patient has a dominant eye or binocularity. Both conditions can be corrected with prescription eyewear or vision therapy.

In many cases, refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism) can be improved with LASIK so that athletes do not need to wear contact lenses or glasses. After your sports vision eye exam, your eye doctor would be happy to discuss the benefits of LASIK if you have one or more refractive errors.
