Optomap Retinal Exams

Seeing a large portion of the eye's interior has never been easy -- but it's essential for catching sight-stealing eye diseases and disorders in time to administer effective treatment. While dilation is the traditional procedure for permitting a wider view inside the eye, there are times when another, the more advanced method may be desired. Optomap retinal exams provide a modern digital process for capturing a 200-degree view of the eye's interior and recording those images. Doctors Trudell and Cottrell are proud to offer this technology.

What to Expect from a Optomap Retinal Exam

If you have ever had a basic eye exam, you've probably had the doctor look inside your eye with the aid of  bright light. But unless your pupils were dilated beforehand, only a small amount of the retina of the eye would have been visible. This is a problem because many serious eye diseases and disorders can lurk undetected in other areas of the eye, invisible to this kind of basic viewing. These eye diseases may include:

  • Melanoma of the eye
  • Glaucoma (visible as optic nerve damage)
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy (which produces abnormal blood vessels and bleeding in the eye)
  • Retinal tears or detachments

Why Your Eye Doctor Administers Optomap Retinal Exams

Dilating the pupils provides a much better angle for observation, bringing most of the retina into view. But this tried-and-true method has its own limitations. Extremely light-sensitive individuals may have trouble keeping their eyes open wide enough for inspection, limiting your doctor's ability to get a good view even after dilation. Children may also find the dilation exam disagreeable and refuse to cooperate. Additionally, there's no way to share what we're seeing with our patients using standard dilation.

Optomap retinal exams can address these challenges conveniently. The Optomap system uses digital technology to capture an exceptionally wide view of the interior of the eye, and it does so in a brief flash that even sensitive eyes can easily withstand. Better yet, the detailed three-dimensional image it constructs can be viewed instantly on a computer monitor, allowing your eye doctor to go over it with you, pointing out various details and answering your questions. This image can then be transferred to your permanent file for future reference and comparisons.

Optomap retinal exams are neither "better" than dilation nor an outright substitution for them. There may be occasions when dilation remains the best way of viewing your particular condition, so your eye doctor may alternate these methods from exam to exam. But for individuals who cannot tolerate dilation for whatever reason, Optomap retinal exams represent a genuine sight saver.
