Longmont Eye Doctor Explains Eye Allergies

Everybody talks about being allergic to this or that, but do you know what an allergy really is? With eye allergies, just like with allergies of other types, some individuals are born with a body chemistry that reacts badly to certain substances. For instance, almost all humans are allergic to mosquito venom, which makes them itch when bitten. Allergies cause a typical round of symptoms for most people. Airborne allergens such as pollen, pet dander, mold and dust frequently cause the worst eye allergy symptoms. Our eye doctor also advises that other substances can cause eye allergies, such as certain cosmetics or eye drops.

An Optometrists View of Eye Allergy Symptoms

How can you tell if you have eye allergies? Our optometrists usually look for a variety of symptoms combined with exposure to commonly known allergens. They'll begin with an eye exam to rule out more serious causes, but will consider your problems due to allergies if you have a few of the following symptoms:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Crusty eyelashes upon waking

Treating Eye Allergies

Getting relief from eye allergies is a combined approach, with professional eye care working in tandem with efforts you do on your own. Begin with preventing the allergy attacks by avoiding allergens as much as possible. On those days when there is more pollen in the air than usual, avoid going outdoors if you can. Your air conditioner can be a help by filtering the pollen from your inside air. Use a high-quality filter on your HVAC unit. if you do have to go outside, wear wraparound sunglasses to avoid having allergens blown into your eyes.

If you wear contact lenses, consider switching to eyeglasses during allergy season. The surface of contact lenses can attract and hold airborne allergens, keeping them directly on your eyes to irritate them. If you still want to avoid eyeglasses, switch to disposable lenses to avoid a buildup of allergens on the surface of your lenses.

Use over the counter eye drops if you have mild to moderate eye allergy symptoms. Allergies are so common that there is a wide variety of products for you to choose from. For the most severe cases where over the counter drops won't work, our optometrists can prescribe stronger medication.
